There was a city called Badrawati in ancient times. It was ruled by king named Suketumaan whose queen was named Shaiva. Unfortunately, the couple did not have a child and because or the astics (Rishis) were unaccepted as rituals so they would avoid part taking in the rituals despite the fact that the king spent most of his time religious activities & rituals. Others were also worried that at his death their clan would get extinct as there was no successor. And there would hardly anybody to the Pind Dhaan after death. Infact, the king even did had no liking for even his friends, Ministers, Servants, Army , property etc. Infact , he would not even take food for days together. He would consider his life as waste.
It was said that if you donot have a son, one would hardly be liberated from Devren, Pitraren or even Manushren. Without doing Vishnu bahkti , one would not get a son or money or even knowledge.
One day with such a passive mood he rode his horse & raced towards a thick forest. After reaching there he started searching for a place to rest. There he saw Bud, Pipal, khazoor, Molsiri, Imli, Showl, Tamal, Arjun, Behda, Plash trees three. Along side, he saw the fauna like Stag, Monkey, Hare, Snakes, Elephant & even Lion etc.
As the night fell he heard the strange voices of Wolves, Jackals and other strange hovels of lions & other wild animals. THERE voices disturbed him the whole night & could not have even a wink of sleep. So he moved here and there aimlessly during the whole night. Infact, it was afternoon next day when the King did realise thirst & tiredness.
King thought to himself that he did such great Puja pad, Yag, Dhaan, Tarpan and treated his subjects like his children.
The king in his heart of hearts thought, the he offered rich feast & dakshina to Bramans & sadhus to their satisfaction. But still i have such great suffering. He questioned himself as to what he mistake he has done to suffer this.
So he was he was loitering aimlessly in this somber mood, the king saw a beautiful lake beset with beautiful flowers as of it was the legendary Mansarovar lake. Lot of beautiful water birds & fauna like Rajhans, Chakravak, Papiha etc were there. He also saw many sages & RISHIS doing tapsaya and reciting mantras. Upon seeing this sight the went to Rishis and paid obeisance to them.
Upon seeing this, the Rishis said,” We are happy the way you have treated us . Please tell us your problem.”
The King asked them, “ Sir, who are you people & why have come to this sarovar?”
Upon this, they said,” We are Vishavdev. We had come here for having bath. It is Posh Shukal Paksh Ekadeshi today. Anybody who desires to give birth to a son, will have to undertake penance by having this ekadashi fast.
The king said,”I have done many rituals & penance for having a boy but all efforts have gone wasted. I didn’t get a son. If you are happy with me, plz bestow me this ritual religiously . You will have definitely a son by performing this ritaul & our blessings.”
Upon hearing these instructions of rishis he observed he observed the Putrada Ekadashi & duadeshi by performing right rituals there. And after paying respects to Rishis, came back home. As per the blessings of the Rishis & strict adherence of the ritual, the queen gave birth to a beautiful male child. The king overwhelmed by the joy of having a son & even the ancestors in heavens were also pleased.
Dharamraj Yudushtra said to Bhagwan Krishna,” Anybody who performs the ritual of fasting during Putrada Ekadashi of Paush Shukalpaksh is bound to have a son
