As per the story, a King named Mahisman was ruling champawati. He had the eldest son Lumpak who was very cruel and bad. He always had a bad eye on women and was involved with prostitutes. He was habitual of wasting money of his father. He would also rebuke & dishonour Devtaas, Brahmans, Vishnavs. When the King came to know about these misdeeds of his eldest son he expelled him from his state. Upon his excommunication by King, he then started to think what to do now & where to go?
Finally , he thought of thievery to survive. He would remain in the nearby jungle during day and during night conduct theft in his fathers kingdom and terrorize the local people there. And also kill or harass them. The simple people got harassed. Even when the officials caught hold of him and arrested, he was let off by the officials fearing that he was the son of the King.
There was a big & ancient tree in the forest. People would even venerate it like a God. The vile Lumpak would live under that tree.. But people would think this as a playground of Gods. After some period, on the 10 day of Paush Krishan Paksh, Lumpak could not sleep as there was cold temperature there and he was almost naked. His body became stiff.
By morning he was he was unconscious but came into senses after the heat of Sun at midday grew. He went into the search of food by dragging himself as he did not have enough energy to do hunting also. He somehow picked of some fallen fruits & came back to the same Pepal tree.
By time Sun had set and he crawled to the tree somehow & said,” O God, now these fruits are for you only. Please enjoy them. He could not , sleep for the whole night because of starvation.”
However, the God got deeply impressed by this fast & sleepless night and all his vices were forgiven. Next a beautiful horse laden with lot of food stuffs came & stood in front of him.
Suddenly, there was akashwani which said,’ “ Hi Prince, your all vices have been cleared with the grace of Shri Narain. Now you go to your father and get your status of prince back. The prince was happy and chanting, ‘ God, you are great” he went running to his father. His father was so happy to see him that he bestowed the whole state to him and went himself to Van (forest)
Lumpak started to rule now and built a family & children. His whole family became an ardent devotee of Bhagwan Narayan. As per legend he also handed over his state to his son and went to the forest in his old age and went to heavens from there upon death.
